I love this episode, too, although wikipedia didn't exist yet, nor the internet, either, for that matter. What I saw was a criticism of schooling as I had experienced it in the 1950's and 1960's. Memorize lots of details out of context then recite 'em back for exams. What a waste of time. 99% of everything I learned then or since has come from the books I have read and subsequent reflections thereon.

I homeschooled our kids from kindergarten through high school graduation and, believe me, they know how to read and think for themselves. No SpeedLearn in our family!

Gosh...

... after having given this one some thought, I can really only reach the conclusion that my own favourite episode has to be 'Once Upon A Time'.

The sheer strength, the rawness of emotion, the gradual erosion of No. 2's authority, the intensity... words cannot really truly encapsulate how I feel about 'Once Upon A Time'.

It is just sheer perfection. McGoohan and McKern are simply brilliant and Angelo Muscat calmly provides the perfect counterbalance to the two maelstroms whirling around him.

What else can I say?

I completely agree! Seeing McGoohan's performance in this made me want to see more of his work.. and it all went on from there! :P

One thing I find with Once Upon A Time.. is I always forget that it was television. Television can be wonderful of course, but it's so powerful, theatrical... claustrophobic.. it's nothing like I've ever seen before. I was glued to the screen! In fact I still am when I watch it :P

Free for All is my favourite, and he should of turned himself into Number 2 so he could escape.

But it was a set-up from the start.

'Free For All' is an intelligent, thought-provoking episode - good choice there, Tiswas :).

What Jan says is completely right - it was all a set-up - to break No. 6's spirit, persuade him to spill the beans about his resignation.
